The restoration and its current specification

The restoration covered the panels, paintwork, interior and engine. The bodywork was repainted in the original colour and the cabin has been restored.

The car currently has a 1,200 cc engine that has been replaced and is correct for the model: it is not the original unit of this example. The gearbox fitted is a synchromesh unit. These details describe the car’s current specification and are separate from the historical notes on the model.

The history of the Beetle Split Window

The 1952 Beetle belongs to the first phase of Volkswagen’s post-war history. Type 1 production restarted in Wolfsburg in December 1945 and, from 1947, exports helped spread the model beyond Germany.

The two-piece rear window is the hallmark of the cars known today as Split Window or Brezel. Introduced also to avoid the cost of a curved rear glass, this detail defines a precise period of the model: in 1953 the central pillar disappeared and the oval rear window arrived. A 1952 example therefore represents the final phase of this first, unmistakable silhouette.
