Classic car transport: what to prepare before collection

The car’s condition, the loading method and the information to collect: a guide to preparing the move to the workshop or into storage.

SC Classic SRL editorial team · Updated on

Taking a classic car to a workshop, collecting it after a purchase or moving it into storage needs a little more information than a plain address. Before booking the trip you have to describe the car and agree how it will be moved.

This guide helps you prepare the first conversation. To arrange a move to SC Classic in Cambiago, in the Milan area, see the classic car transport service.

Describe the condition, not just the model

“Non-running” can mean very different things. Is it that the engine will not start, or that the car cannot even roll? Does the steering work? Are parts dismantled? Prepare a concrete description, with photographs, and flag what you do not know. There is no need to attempt a start just to complete the request.

Agree the vehicle and the loading method

An enclosed transport limits exposure to weather and debris compared with an open vehicle. The choice has to be weighed together with value, condition and route. Ask how ground clearance, loading, securing and any transfers between vehicles will be handled: the word “covered” alone does not describe the whole operation. These points are also covered by the American Collectors Insurance guide.

Preparing a handover sheet

If the car has a particular starting procedure or controls that are not obvious, leave short, legible instructions. Agree how the keys will be handled, remove personal items and flag separate components or accessories. The same American Collectors Insurance guide stresses the value of written instructions and a direct contact during the move.

For your own records, prepare recent photographs and a list of the details to check at collection and delivery. Separate what is already known from what still has to be established: this makes the comparison between owner, carrier and workshop more precise.

If the trip crosses a border

An international move needs a separate assessment of documentation, timing and costs. Before confirming, ask which tasks are included and which stay with you. The Hagerty guide to international transport highlights the importance of considering the whole journey. Procedures depend on the countries involved: the source’s US guidance cannot be applied automatically to an Italian or European move.

The information to send SC Classic

  • Make, model and year of the car.
  • Collection and delivery locations.
  • Driving condition and any parts that have been removed.
  • Photographs and access constraints at the collection point.
  • Reason for the move and the period you have in mind.

If the trip comes before a classic car restoration, add the available work history and the aim of the work. If a purchase follows, agree with the seller in advance who will be present at collection.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to restart a car that has been idle for years?

Do not do it just because it makes transport easier. Describe the real state and agree how the car will be moved on the basis of that condition.

Can I get a quote from the model alone?

Setting up the request also needs the route, the car’s condition and how accessible the locations are. Sharing these avoids building the assessment on assumptions.
