How a full classic car restoration works
From initial assessment to final testing: the stages of a complete restoration and the documents to agree with the workshop for a clearly defined project.

Restoring a classic car means working on an object with an existing history of use, maintenance and repairs. The approach varies from car to car: an Italian sports car, a British saloon and a Porsche 356 do not automatically call for the same decisions. The method should nevertheless make clear what is being checked and what is being decided.
1. Assessment and objective
Documents, images and information about the vehicle are gathered. The objective is defined: retaining the current specification, preserving deteriorated parts or returning to a documented historical reference. The choice between preservation and full restoration must be addressed before removing material that can be saved.
2. Dismantling and inventory
Where required, dismantling should be accompanied by identification and photographs. A useful inventory distinguishes parts that can be preserved, items requiring checks, missing spares and assemblies assigned specific work. It should still be possible to establish a part's original position and condition months later.

3. Body shell, fit and protection
Structural assessment precedes finishing. The plan should explain how repairs and missing parts will be addressed, which checks are needed and when panels and adjoining components will be trial-fitted. Surfaces that will become inaccessible warrant documentation before they are closed off.
4. Mechanical components and systems
The engine, transmission, suspension, brakes and systems should be treated according to the needs identified. “Overhauled” should be accompanied by a list of operations, components involved and relevant checks. Not every assembly needs the same level of work; a reasoned decision is more useful than indiscriminate replacement.
5. Paintwork, interiors and details
Colours, materials and finishes should follow the agreed project. For retained parts, the planned treatment is clarified; for new ones, the reference used is recorded. An undocumented detail should be investigated before it becomes a final decision.
6. Reassembly, testing and handover
Reassembly includes functional checks and adjustments, not just fitting parts. Final tests must be defined according to the car and the work performed. The owner should receive an understandable summary of the work, components, checks and guidance for subsequent use.
